Parking Lot to Paseo Conversion
For the Santa Barbara Architectural Design Competition 2019, my proposal involves transforming a parking lot into a vibrant community space, seamlessly integrated into State Street’s classic style of paseos in the theatre district. The design includes:
- Apartments:
- Eight apartments discreetly positioned away from the bustling walking area to ensure privacy.
- Thoughtful architecture to blend with the surroundings.
- Walking Area:
- A well-designed walking area with a classic paseo vibe, creating a pedestrian-friendly environment.
- Incorporates landscaping and seating for a relaxed atmosphere.
- Bus Stop:
- A small, strategically placed bus stop at the beginning of the paseo for convenient access.
- Enhances connectivity for visitors entering and exiting the area.
- Children’s Theatre:
- A charming small theatre catering specifically to children’s performances.
- Adds a cultural and artistic dimension to the community.
- Resting Areas:
- Scattered throughout the paseo are resting spots, providing opportunities for relaxation and socializing.
- Thoughtful placement near restaurants, cafes, and a bank for community engagement.
The design prioritizes the integration of residential spaces with public areas, enhancing the overall community experience. The emphasis on State Street’s classic paseo style ensures continuity with the surrounding architecture, while the addition of cultural and recreational elements contributes to a vibrant and inclusive urban environment.
In a tight 8-hour window, participants were tasked with translating a common prompt into an architectural solution using only pencil and sharpie. Designs were impartially evaluated, leading to the selection of finalists who presented their solutions before a judging panel. The process highlighted the ability to swiftly craft visually compelling proposals within strict time limits and communicate design choices effectively—an exercise emphasizing adaptability and creativity in architectural design.
This design was awarded first place in the 2019 Santa Barbara Architectural Design Competition
